概要
20世紀は公衆衛生が大きく進歩した時代であった。米国の医学界は、病気の診断や治療において大きな前進を示した。多くの感染性の病気を予防するワクチンが開発され、抗生物質が、以前なら怪我や手術、出産、幼児疾患などをきわめて危険なものにしていた細菌性感染を抑止した。
一方で、米国民も病気と個人の行動との関わりをいっそう自覚するようになった。米国公衆衛生局長官が、1964年にはじめてアメリカ国民に喫煙の害悪を警告して以来、喫煙者の割合はほぼ50%から約25%まで低下している。公共の建物や国内旅行の電車、バス、飛行機ではもはや喫煙は認められない。ほとんどの米国のレストランでは、喫煙が認められた区域とそうでない区域とが分けられている。研究によれば、肺ガン罹患率の大幅な低下と喫煙率の全国的な低下とは関連がある。
連邦政府も国民に、定期的に運動し、たくさんの果物や野菜を摂取する、健康な食生活をするよう奨励している。今では米国民の40%以上が、日常生活の規則的な繰り返しとして、運動やスポーツをしている。果物野菜の一人当たり摂取量は、1970年以来およそ20%増加している。
