連邦政府に加えて、各州には州独自の憲法と政府が存在する。それぞれの州にも立法府、行政府、司法府の３部門がある。

  行政府の長は知事と呼ばれる。各州の住民は、自分達の知事や州議会の代表を選ぶために選挙で投票を行う。州議会はそれぞれの州に適用される法律を制定する。これらの法律は米国憲法と矛盾してはならないし、また各州の司法府はその州の法律を維持する。

  それぞれの州にはまた、地方政府がある。市政府や郡政府、場合によっては両方が存在することもある。これらの政府が地域社会に、公立学校や図書館、警察や消防署、水道、ガス、電気といった数多くのサービスを提供し統括している。地域社会の住民は、ふつう地方政府の職員を選ぶため投票を行うが、職員によっては任命によるものもある。自分達のリーダーとして市長をおいているところもあり、市議会や郡議会を設置しているところもある。地域社会にはまた、公立学校を監督するために、選ばれまたは任命された市民で構成する教育委員会がある。
