家族はあらゆる社会の基盤である。家族はどこであれ、小さな集まりや多数の個人の集まりから成り、また単純な構造のものーひとつ屋根のもとの結婚した夫婦と一人の子供―から、複雑で込み入っていて、数世代が混じり合って１世帯またはそれ以上で暮らすものまである。常に、社会の発展とともに家族の構成も進化する。他の要因―たとえば平均余命や養子縁組に対する考え方―が変化すれば、家族に与える影響はきわめて大きい。

  米国の家族の伝統的な構成―母親、父親、子供―は、新世紀が幕を開けても、大部分優勢を保っている。しかし過去数十年間で、米国社会では、科学技術の進歩から職場構成に至るまで、あらゆる領域に及ぶ無数の要因によって、家族構成や日常生活の様々な面で新展開が見られた。片親、養子世帯、継父母、在宅父親、祖父母による子育ては、モザイクの新たなタイルのごく一部に過ぎない。
